While organizing a trip to Bali in April 2006, I discovered that Simple Minds were playing in Singapore at the same period of time… Considering that a stopover in Singapore was not inducing additional flight costs, we decided with my husband to do a three-day stopover in Singapore.
We safely landed in Singapore on April 30th and enjoyed some rest at the hotel before heading to Fort Canning Park, an outdoor place. We managed to get tickets at the entrance (I would not do this now in 2026) and entered the park. Most of the public was sitting on the green and having picnic on table clothes with baskets full of food, beer etc… So British 😊
We just managed to get front row and squatted right in the middle of the small standing area (as we did not want to disturb the picnic fans).
No opening act. The concert started a few minutes later.
To be noticed: the table clothes and baskets quickly disappeared, and the audience stood up!
The first one to open his eyes was Charlie with a huge smile on his face when he saw us. Jim saw him looking at the crowd and also recognized us. We were entitled to a wink and a smile. Then Eddie also noticed something was going on, came on our side and really laughed.
I suppose that seeing French fans on this other side of the world was a bit surprising 😊 but this gig (brilliant as always) will always remain one of our best memories.
And the following trip to Bali was superb of course!
