Juan Antonio Samaranch Olympic Hall
📋 Information
- Zetra Olympic Hall
Iconic indoor multi-purpose arena built for the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, where it hosted ice hockey, figure skating and the closing ceremony. Designed by architects Lidumil Alkalfic and Dusan Dapa, the hall opened on 14 February 1982 and can accommodate 12,000 spectators (up to 18,000 for concerts). During the Siege of Sarajevo (1992-1996), Zetra was severely damaged by shelling and fire; its wooden seats were used to make coffins for war victims. Rebuilt in the late 1990s with funding from the International Olympic Committee, it was renamed in 2010 in honour of IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch. The complex also houses a speed skating rink, three smaller gyms, a bowling alley, the Bosnia and Herzegovina Olympic Museum, and hosts the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2019. Today it serves as Sarajevo’s premier venue for concerts, sporting events, fairs and conferences.
